Only Recipient in the Northeast to be Honored out of 500 Nominees

NEW YORK - Jacqueline Barnes, RN, MPH, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and a resident of Roosevelt Island, NY, has been recognized for outstanding patient care with a New York Times Job Market "Tribute to Nurses" award. The award recognizes nurses or nurse educators who have been nominated by their peers and/or patients for extraordinary achievements in the nursing profession and in patient care. Out of 500 nominees, Barnes is one of four nurses to receive the award - and the only honoree from the Northeast region. The award winners will be featured in a special advertising section in The New York Times Magazine on Sunday, November 19.
During her 16 years at MSKCC, Barnes has been a leader and educator to her colleagues and a tireless caregiver and advocate to her patients. Described as a "nurse's nurse," Barnes' colleagues state that she is extremely energetic and stands out among many other expert nurses for her genuine devotion to her patients. Barnes is also cited for her superior nursing skills, and colleagues say she serves as an inspiration to the many young nurses with whom she works side by side.
"While most nurses as experienced and qualified as Jackie is often choose to leave the bedside, Jackie chose to come back," says Elizabeth McCormick, Executive Director of Nursing at MSKCC. "We are very proud and fortunate to have Jackie on staff. She is a true role model and a leader to be admired."
Combining her love of humanity, nursing, and knowledge, Barnes uses her vacations to help underprivileged patients across the world. She has traveled on medical missions to such countries as El Salvador, Cuba, Africa, and China. Most recently Barnes has been instrumental in the development of a medical clinic in Nepal. While in New York City, Barnes' commitment isn't limited to MSKCC. She also volunteers as a counselor working with people with HIV and AIDS, and gives free medical services to the homeless at Bowery Mission.
